From our workshop, we take great pride in continuing the long tradition of bootmaking in the greater Philadelphia area. Every pair of our boots is a testament to the highest standards of American craftsmanship, built with hours of individual attention and the finest materials sourced from heritage tanneries.

  • The Art of the Hand

    "Handmade" isn't a marketing term, it's our standard operating procedure. Handwork is integrated into every stage of the build:

    • Clicking: We trace and "click" (cut) every upper by hand, ensuring we avoid imperfections in the hide and utilize the best leather for the most important parts of the boot.
    • Skiving: Our counters are hand-skived, tapering the leather edges to ensure a smooth appearance and a sturdy hold on the foot.
    • The Lasting Board: We trim and bevel the edges of our lasting boards by hand, tailoring the foundation of the boot to the exact shape of the last.

  • The Anatomy of a Build

    We utilize a robust, overbuilt construction method that combines the best of traditional hand-lasting with specialized stitching for extreme durability.

    • Hand-Lasted Foundation: Our boots are hand-lasted over a 10-11 oz wet-molded lasting board. This thick leather foundation eventually takes the shape of your footprint, creating a custom-molded feel.
    • Vegetable-Tanned Support: We use hand-skived, vegetable-tanned counters for heel stability and flexible 11-oz midsoles for support and longevity.
    • Hybrid Stitching:
    1. The Forefoot: The boot is stitched down twice: first through the vamp and midsole, then again through the vamp, midsole and outsole, making it flexible, durable and resoleable.
    2. McKay Stitching: The entire shoe is stitched inside through the lasting board, quarters, vamp lining and midsole for a secure, low-profile attachment.

What is Patina?

Patina is the transformation of high-quality leather over time. It is the darkening of the creases, the golden sheen that develops on high-wear areas, and the unique character marks that are earned through miles of travel.

At its core, patina is the story of your boots told by wear, tear, and care. It is the visual record of your journey, making a mass-produced item look sterile by comparison. It's personal. No two pairs are the same, and your individual environment will determine how your boots age just as much as each scuff or each conditioning.

A patina cannot be bought; it must be earned.

Built to Mature

The difference between a "used" boot and a "patinated" one lies in its construction:

  • Porous, Full-Grain Leathers: Unlike factory boots coated in plastic finishes, our vegetable-tanned hides remain "open." They breathe and absorb the environment, allowing colors to deepen and develop a rich, natural glow. Scratches are a permanent testament to where the leather has taken you.
  • Natural Foundations: By replacing synthetic foams and plastics with leather midsoles and cork, the boot molds to your anatomy. Long after a plastic sole has split and a foam insole has collapsed, these boots will still be going.

Why do enthusiasts prize a heavily patinated boot?

  1. Identity: No two patinas are the same. Your boots will look different than any other pair in the world based on how you walk, where you live, and how you care for them.
  2. Longevity: Most things look their best the day you buy them. A hand-built boot looks its best five years later. Appreciating patina is about valuing the enduring over the new.
  3. Story: That scuff while tuning up your bike or the darkening from a rainy trek in the city becomes a memory etched into the leather. Your boots are the story of you.
