GMTO: The Airstrip Shoe

GMTO: The Airstrip Shoe

The Airstrip Shoe is our second shoe release and a tribute to a specific era of history: the 1940s expansion of U.S. Naval aviation. As the fleet moved beyond steel decks, gear evolved for life on hard ground. Brown leather became the hallmark of officers and aviation personnel: rugged, practical, and built for movement.

This shoe is our second interpretation of the heritage low quarter. Like the Surface Sailor Shoe, the Airstrip Shoe isn't meant for a shelf. It’s a tool for long days on your feet. This is footwear meant to be worn hard and often.

Leather

For this build, we selected Seidel Double Shot in Dark Brown. It’s a smooth‑grain leather with a soft, waxy feel and a depth of color that changes quickly with wear. Double‑Shot develops character naturally: gentle creases form, highlights emerge, and the leather takes on a lived‑in patina rather than staying pristine. Brown leather has long been valued for its practicality and forgiveness, and Double‑Shot reflects those same qualities, with it's ability to take the abuse of operating on a dusty remote airstrip without losing its gorgeous shine.

Build & Silhouette

The Airstrip Shoe is built on our 1942 Last, featuring a supportive arch and a refined almond toe that looks "all business" while staying planted. Based on a heritage U.S. Navy pattern, the design favors clean, utilitarian lines over excess detailing—making it equally at home in a formal inspection or a casual trek.

For the construction, we chose a structured-toe Stitchdown construction. This method creates a low, stable profile with a wide ground-feel, ensuring the shoe holds its shape through years of heavy use. It’s a build focused on pure durability, delivering a rugged, flexible foundation that never feels bulky.

Sole & Internals

Underfoot, the Airstrip features a Vibram 269 Westerner sole: slim through the waist but robust where it counts, providing a solid platform without the visual bulk. We paired it with a Vibram 430 mini-lug heel for a sleek profile that delivers unexpected traction and historical accuracy.

Inside, the shoe is fully lined for longevity, including a suede heel cup to eliminate slip and ease the break-in process. The result is a build that balances arch support with flexibility; it feels substantial yet agile, engineered to stay comfortable from morning reveille to sundown.
